reason #52 why drake should get hit by a streetcar

by Crystal Gibson on July 21, 2010

He is launching a Toronto Music Festival

Apparently this isn’t breaking news – people know about it. I suppose I wouldn’t since I don’t care/try to ignore everything that is related to Drake. The OVO Festival will be taking place on August 1 (Caribana Weekend) at the Molson Amphitheatre.

Here’s what’s wrong with this picture:

- this is not a festival

- $93 for a one-day show with lame artists is ridiculous

- why is Drake trying to monopolize Toronto people on Caribana Weekend?

- Toronto doesn’t care about Drake (especially because he thinks it’s so unsafe) – cue: TTC quote: “I feel unsafe in Toronto at all times. I’m a one of one. There’s no one else you can hate as much as me if you hate money, or you hate success.”

- Toronto has numerous music festivals that are way more legit

And if the thought of him hosting a music festival wasn’t enough, here’s what he’s saying about OVO:

“I truly believe this is entertainment at a level that the city has never seen before,” Drake said in a statement. “I’m hoping that it is a safe and magical night and that OVO Festival becomes tradition every year.”

No, I will not link you to a page where you can buy tickets because frankly, I don’t want anyone to go.

i want to point out that this is another blog about being a hater, moreso than a blog about anything else. haters hate. that's all haters do. you are a hater because you have nothing good to say. drake is a musical superstar. drake is a performing sensation. i don't understand it either, but it seems to be true. he is making more money than you, me and everyone reading this blog...combined. stop hating for the sake of hating. embrace the music baby. yeah.

while I appreciate your opinion.err.. overuse of the word hater.. I wonder how this has any relevance to his music. My distaste is in the formulation of a 'festival' created by Drake. I'm also not sure why it matters that he/anyone else is making more money than me.. I don't think that legitimizes credibility.
  • Kevin: This isn't hating.... This is calling someone out on their bullshit. Big difference.

Artist run festivals are becoming a big deal lately. Labels know full well that the live forum is the best way to monetize, so a festival makes sense. It also helps the brand, of course, with impressions and image.

You're bang on though, Crystal. This simply is NOT a festival. Festivals span 2 or more days, showcase all sorts of artists at all levels of their career, and spread good vibes through music and sense of community.

If you want an example of a REAL artist run festival, check out what Wilco is planning:

3 days, more than 20 bands, comedy, art, etc. THAT's a festival.

Make no mistake: OVO is simply a Drake concert.
  • Ha! I'm suppose to be going to review that show. I didn't realize that was a 'festival'. I thought it was just part of his tour. Hilarious.

hahaha! I love this. it'd be amazing to start your very own music festival, but how many artists make their own music festival to promote themselves and randos?! that's it, i'm starting my own music festival.
  • ouch!

but u can't blame a guy for trying....
  • crystalgibson
if he wants to try, he should get in touch with what's actually going on in Toronto and feature some of our outstanding hip-hop artists.

Every time I hear about him I have to avoid saying "wow, he's done really well for himself, overcome a lot of obstacles, considering he was in a wheelchair a few years ago."
  • ah-mazing! definitely should have stuck it out as the wheelchaired basketball kid in Degrassi.

    You said it!
