My Pet Hipster

by Crystal Gibson on February 22, 2010

I live in the most un-hipster part of the city but I work closely with them slash know where they hang slash attracted to some of them – I’ve grown to love them and their cute American Apparel-clad selves. I thought I’d preface this post with that clarification since I sometimes come across as a hater. After podcamp on Saturday we all went to get some drinks and I ran into Andrew Louis (@hyfen) who told me about the article published in the Torontoist about a pigeon riding the TTC:

Sean (@seanward) created this masterpiece after I decided to turn the pigeon into a hipster:

Granted, it was a very long day so I was delirious (I suppose the hipster pigeon was funnier then). Speaking of things I did while I was delirious:

We ended up talking about ‘Missed Connections’ on Craigslist and @LizRiceToronto showed me an absolutely ridiculous entry that I proceeded to read out loud. Yes, we had a ‘Missed Connections’ reading and it was vulgar. I don’t know where the video is but I know that there is one – ask @jeremywright or @jarodvhale.

Vampire Weekend ‘Giving Up the Gun’

The video for the second track off ‘Contra’ was released on Friday and it does not disappoint. The boys (headed by the crush of my life, Ezra Koenig) make a subtle appearance in the vid. Instead, a super cute prepster girl plays tennis against superstars – yes stars. Jake Gyllenhaal, Joe Jonas, Lil Jon and the RZA himself share the screen. This seems strange for the New York hotties, but who am I to complain. Enjoy x

Google & RIM = Late Bloomers

by Crystal Gibson on February 17, 2010

I swear by my Blackberry. I don’t care that it freezes sometimes or that it doesn’t have a zillion different apps. Hell, I don’t care that it Desktop Manager for Mac isn’t all that great. Notwithstanding, the browser is the only thing that leaves me with the urge to iPhone it up. It is completely inefficient and slower than my failing Macbook – I don’t understand how it’s taken so long to address this issue. Yes, the issue has been addressed – our friends at RIM have gotten over the failed bid for a hockey team and they’re ready to deliver a browser that is 2010-friendly. CEO Mike Lazaridis demonstrated the forthcoming browser, which is based on the same WebKit rendering engine used by the iPhone and phones based on Google’s Android OS. Slated for release sometime later this year, the browser is allegedly more network-efficient than its rivals and handles AJAX, CSS and HTML5 with ease.

Here are the video demonstrations (courtesy of All Things Digital):

So, what do we think Blackberry users? Considering the late arrival of a relevant browser, do you think it’ll be amazing? Did you used to have a Blackberry but switched to another smartphone because of the lame browser? Let me know! x

Reason #5412 why I Love GaGa: She Owns the Keytar

by Crystal Gibson on February 16, 2010

Lady GaGa performed at the Brit Awards over the weekend, as usual she killed it. She started off with ‘Telephone’ sung as a ballad, mentioning that the performance was dedicated to the late Alexander McQueen. Beside her was a mannequin sporting McQueen’s famous hoof shoes. She tore off her bundled mess to reveal a phenomenal bodysuit and headed over to the biggest and most rad keytar I’ve ever seen. Gagster sang ‘Dance in the Dark’ – AMAZING!

Craig and I made these Bad Romance sunnies today. Methinks they rock:

How I’m Coping with Post-Modern Facebook

by Crystal Gibson on February 15, 2010

The facts aren’t nearly as fascinating as the three word alliteration in the title, but I’m hoping you’ll keep reading. Facebook just recently celebrated it’s sixth birthday, hooray! I remember joining in first year university eager to socialize with all my classmates at Rye High, now I live on Facebook – not as a creeper checking out status updates and photos but a creeper checking out bands’ fan bases and managing fan pages.

Here are some super rad helpful statistics about the most used social networking platform (Mashable):
I’ve expressed my discontent with Facebook’s new layout and how much it impedes my ability to get news stories out to our fans, I thought I’d share how I’ve sort of remedied this situation.

Last week a co-worker asked me how he was supposed to get through to his fans since there is no direct way of getting to pages from Facebook’s homepage. He was angry and irritated (naturally) and I decided that I needed to find a surefire way to get through to my fans. Clearly, with an organically growing fan base like ours, we need to keep on top with out updates and find ways to keep our audience interested (posting cool stuff is no longer an answer). We need responses and ‘likes’ to make us relevant (Zuckerberg and Co. are evidently unaware of AUX TV’s cool factor) but how do we do it?

Sending an update to all of your fans guarantees that your post will show up in their field. Go into the ‘Edit this page’ section (right below the profile picture), on the right side there is a column that says ‘Promote this page’, click on the ‘Update all fans’ link and voila! So Facebook thinks they’re going to stop me from being the number one platform lead to our site? Think again bitches!
