Malajube – ‘Luna’

If you know me well, you’ll know that I could listen to any or all three Malajube albums wherever and whenever. These boys have such an infectious, celestial sound yet I almost hear Gothic vibes as well. ‘Luna’ appears on their third album Labyrinthes; this is also the album that earned the band a Polaris Short List nomination. Catch a Malajube show if you have the chance. The Québécois boys are phenomenal!

Happy Valentine’s Day

Béatrice Martin aka Coeur de pirate – Commes des Enfants

Alors, I can pretend to be a Valentine’s Day hater to an extent because I totally get sucked into the Hallmark holiday sometimes. Wishing you all a lovely day with tons of flowers and chocolates and kisses and snuggles and love! This Coeur de pirate song is so beautiful and the words are super sweet. Enjoy it and pick up her album because shes a Montreal princess who is here to stay!

The Tale of Two Twaters (Tw-ai-ters): Twitter Haters

by Crystal Gibson on February 12, 2010

Last night I went to the highly anticipated #HaiHaiTO event at The Courthouse. It was a huge success with more than $10K raised for Haiti relief. It was fantastic to see my co-workers friends @spaghetti_holes and @jenniferherd come out and mix with the twitterati! My new favourite dance party superstar is @SeanWard who blew us all away with his eccentric moves!

I love hanging out with my geek friends at tweetups and I never expect to run into social media haters: I did last night. (Cue ominous music). So, two Jersey Shore-esque dudes stroll up to me (muscles, tans etc), one of them says, “Crystal!” I’m sort of bewildered at this point. “I’m _____! You know, I’m friends with _________ and _________.” Well no wonder, he was a Woodbridge kid that I sort of knew from high school days. They asked what the event was for and as  I mention ‘Twitter’, they look at me with disgust. The arrogant one (not the one I knew) provokes me with questions like, “WTF is Twitter?” “Why do people use it?” “Tell me why I should be on Twitter”. I began to tell him that not everyone uses Twitter but explained that it serves as a remarkable marketing/engaging tool for brands. I tried to find some people I knew to rescue me from the wrath of ignorance town, at the same time, I was trying not to be rude. Alas, he ended up telling me that we should have lunch and I should explain why he should use social media for whatever defunct company he works for. Right. Before I excused myself, I asked them WTF they were doing at #HaiHaiTO in the first place: “Crowdsourcing”. (shakes head).

Google Buzz (Kill)

by Crystal Gibson on February 9, 2010

Google Buzz is what Emu boots are to Uggs: a complete and utter mess.
I understand the convenience of being a social aggregator and I think FriendFeed, Brizzly and TweetDeck do a fantastic job at doing so. I rarely use Google as a social networking tool, mainly because getting them from Twitter, Facebook, FourSquare etc would take far too long.
Google should be ironing out issues from Chrome and Wave before launching a new tool. Not only that, why would you wait until this far in the game to launch it?
Google buzz will be accessible via mobile in three ways: from Google Mobile’s website, from Buzz.Google.com (iPhone and Android), and from Google Mobile Maps. You can check in from your location blah blah FourSquare. There is no mayoral position nor are there badges and points. Pfft. I love FourSquare (but why won’t the Blackberry app work for me?)

What is Google Buzz:
Part email, part Facebook, part Twitter, part Friendfeed, part Foursquare.

You can “follow” people, share stuff like links and photos, add comments, “check in” from locations, and see what your friends are Buzzing.

Like many Google products, it appears to be nicely engineered and has a clean design.

But like many Google services, it lacks any imagination or compelling reasons to use it. (Starting with the name, a rip-off from Yahoo.) As a result, it’s probably not a threat to any of the services it’s trying to disrupt.

An Open Letter to Facebook

by Crystal Gibson on February 9, 2010

Dearest Facebook,

It would seem that you are trying to make my life difficult by rolling out a new interface along with your ‘presumed relevancy‘ nonsense. I sort of find you to be very obnoxious for assuming what all 400 million users find relevant. Furthermore, I believe that the 20 million users that join pages each day do so because they want updates. While I understand that 3 million active pages would seem inundating however I would not join a page I didn’t want updates from. I’m just saying, the people that manage fan pages on your site will find a way to trump your silly presumed relevance tactic and conquer. This is by no means a threatening message, only one to express my distaste.

Thanks for your time,

Love, C xo

P.S. Could you please do something about the photo uploading process? It still sucks.
