We Are Wolves – Fight and Kiss

‘Total Magique’, the second album from We are Wolves was released in 2007 but remains a top dance party choice. The band (consisting of three) are known for their honesty like the celestial lightning on the mystic mountain. It’s a post-punk landscape filled with analogue trees. CBC Radio 3 says, ‘It’s like rock after the post-modern explosion.’ I’ve been in a super electro listening mood these past few days, so if you’ve got any recommendations, leave me a comment. x

Riddle Me this Nicolas Cage

by Crystal Gibson on February 7, 2010

The day started off pretty darn early; Nic and I had to venture all the way to the Mississauga office to get the wicked swag to take to Hillside. We then drove back to the city to pick up Andrew and Mel (our awesome Aux Weekly hosts). I wanted a tea so we stopped at David’s for literally 3 minutes and I got a parking ticket. What is it with the mean parking authorities in Toronto? Alas, we finally got on the road to Guelph and Nic Dj’d with my seemingly diverse iPod. I mean, I had some pretty rad music that I can’t remember listening to; Scissor Sisters, Pissed Jeans…oh and we had to include a Bad Romance moment as well. Guelph is cold. We realized that very quickly after toasting in my car for an hour and a half.

I was incredibly disappointed that they put Basia Bulat on the stage first since she is such an awesome artist (not that the rest aren’t) but, she should’ve had a HUGE crowd. Nic and I soon realized that we could get back staged and after seeing CBC radio 3’s Vish Khanna on stage, our sole mission was to find him.

We totally did. Plus, we gave him an AUX TV pin as well. For the rest of the night he said Hi to me each time we crossed paths. Instant BFF’s.

I then decided that it’d be cool to hang with all of the talent so I dragged Nic along with me and started filming stuff. My goal was to get kicked out…didn’t happen. So we kept going back and forth; snagging drinks and more drinks. By the time we’d gone in for the 8th time or so the Hillside people decided to crash the jam and kick us out. I wish I was filming because I would have made a huge scene and recorded it.

I also may catch pneumonia since I managed to get myself locked out of the building. Nic and I went on a crazy adventure trying to get back inside.

The after party was supposed to be back at my house in Toronto but I was way too tired to drive back so we stayed in Guelph. This video sums up the day (P.S. I am not drunk, just delirious and tired):

Louis Vuitton Gets Trashy

by Crystal Gibson on February 4, 2010

Remember Mugatu and his revolutionary clothing line made entirely out of trash? It was called the ‘Derelicte’ campaign. Poor Zoolander was hypnotized to be part of the runway show, not to mention it was the inevitable in to Mugatu’s design career. Marc Jacobs must have been watching this movie when he decided to design trash bag err.. bags. I prefer the green one as it seems the most authentic looking. “Raindrop Besace” purse retails for a jaw-dropping $1,960; with that price I’ll probably have to give up my condo and hang with the peeps in Regent Park.

P.S. Much love to Craig for sending me this photo. xo

I Finished my Four Years of J-School; Let me blog in peace

by Crystal Gibson on February 2, 2010

Mathew Ingram played both the panelist and moderator at this morning’s Social Media Week event. In my eyes, the former Globe & Mail Communities editor can do no wrong. Macleans’ Andrew Coyne and former Social Media Editor (Business Week Magazine), Shirley Brady were the other two panelists discussing traditional media versus social media.

There were a lot of older people in the crowd, no doubt trying to grasp this concept that is becoming the norm. As Shirley explained, ‘it isn’t easy to just throw a traditionalist into social media and expect them to do well.’
The discussion turned into the topic of bloggers versus journalists and what the foreseeable future sees as far as the divide; are bloggers legitimate? Andrew Coyne noted that journalists have copy writers, editors and people who make sure the facts are legit and that’s what differentiates the two. He also said that journalists read every line and make sure that it all makes sense, which is something that bloggers don’t do. It almost sounded condescending to me; I went to Ryerson and studied journalism and I’m pretty sure I did a pretty awesome job – so if I want to let loose and write a blog about what my dog ate or what annoyed me at Social Media Week – then I will. Huzzah!

In other news, we’ve got some crazy cool stuff happening at Aux TV these days…you know, contests and stuff. Plus I’m going to Hillside Inside in Guelph this Saturday – umm..HUGE jams.

Oh, and I was in NOW Magazine today: http://www.nowtoronto.com/daily/story.cfm?content=173478

Team Tavi

by Crystal Gibson on February 2, 2010

This is Tavi, the blogging sensation that has editors throwing fits everywhere because she is getting priority seating front row spots at every show. Here’s what Flare’s editor-in-chief Lisa Tant had to say:

Albeit, Tant is not the only editor annoyed with the popularity the 13 year-old blogger has gained. She’s written a post for Harper’s Bazaar and personally that was err.. is my ‘go-to’ source for fashion. I read some of Tavi’s posts; most were satirical and almost condescending. Personally, if I saw her out and about speaking to me with the same tone as she uses in her writing I’d seriously consider scolding her. At the same time, she’s being praised my so many credible fashion folk. The Rodarte sisters love Tavi, they even brought her to one of their photo shoots to hang out for the day – uh..lucky.

I don’t know where exactly I stand with this pint-size prodigy, what do you think?
