spotted: rumor mill at #randomTO

by Crystal Gibson on June 10, 2010

I suppose that in any form of media you’re bound to find the rumor mill somewhere – last night I encountered it at #randomTO. After leaving a super pretentious party at Spice Safar, Jess and I headed down the street to Hey Lucy (I suggested it because Jo tweeted that there was a meet-up happening); Jess obliged. We arrived to many unfamiliar faces, naturally we did a round-table introduction. At some point Jo decided to take his Twitter survey questions and ask them in a continued round-table way. ‘Are you dating anyone,’ was the question – I wasn’t really listening, but I think the consensus was ’single’. It was my turn to answer – feeling a little awkward I disclosed my single status (**I wasn’t awkward because I’m single, only because I thought the conversation..or lack thereof was just odd). Nonetheless, the girl sitting beside me proceeds to say (loudly), ‘Aren’t you dating Sean Ward?‘ Wha? I don’t exactly recall what my facial expression was, but I imagine it was blank. I had no idea who this girl was so I was irritated that she’d said that. Someone asked where that question/statement came from and she sort of squirmed in her seat trying to think of something legit to say.
Perhaps it was my sour disposition that contributed to my reaction – but thinking about it now, I feel like I was justified. I can sort of understand if one of my best friends made a stupid comment like that – but for someone that I just met, in a setting with people who aren’t my friends is ludicrous. **My friends aren’t that immature.
I’m not angry with this girl – I don’t even remember her name – but don’t say ridiculous things that could potentially start rumors. As much as I love Sean Ward – we are not dating.

tell me about social media + music

by Crystal Gibson on June 9, 2010

A few weeks ago I was asked to be on Explore Music with Alan Cross to talk about social media and music. On the same panel was Amber McArthur and Andrew Alba. The clips are online – leave me a comment in response to what we discussed and tell me what you thought about my performance…but please be nice!

This segment talks about MySpace’s continued relevance in the music world – when Alan Cross asks for a band that uses their Facebook as a great interactive tool, I have no hesitation when answering Holy Fu*k as my favourite.

This segment opens with Lady Gaga’s ‘Bad Romance’ video (Alan Cross wasn’t thrilled about her being featured on the show). We discuss why she’s had all the success on YouTube. I mention Britney – I’m surprised if anyone gives me any street cred.

Lastly, we all discuss what our social networking site of choice is and what band/artist uses it the most efficiently.

true, i talk of tweets

by Crystal Gibson on June 9, 2010

Twitter is down. I’m not sure how to function without tweetdeck sounds in my ear, blue box highlights from tweetie or push notifications from my iPhone. True, I could revert to Facebook, FriendFeed or dare I say it MySpace – wait, I don’t even know my login for MySpace – but I’d rather tweet. My thoughts no longer span a length longer that 140 characters, I don’t know what @jesus and @fakeAPstylebook are saying – more importantly I can’t do my job.

Here are some things I do when Twitter isn’t working:

#1 – blog about things I do when Twitter isn’t working

#2 – harass Greg (our VP of Operations)

#3 – Take advantage of free food in the office

#4 – Scowl at my boss

#5 – Harass Andrew for band stickers

#6 – Check on my interns

#7 – Check my iPhone

#8 – Watch AUX TV

#9 – Refresh Twitter

Oh, it works now.

I woke up this morning and went to Lady Gaga’s site assuming that while I was sleeping the much anticipated ‘Alejandro’ video was released – it was not. Rather, there was a black screen with falling snow and the words ‘GAGA’ and ‘KLEIN’ flashing intermittently. Gags sent out a tweet at 11:56 AM ET saying ‘I know I may be young..’ and I had goosebumps. How is it that this woman has such an influence over me? I was in a trance for all 9 minutes – I love her.

Here is the video for Dum Dum Girls’ song ‘Jail La La’ – I love this tune and I love the video.

Happy Monday.
